Failed the 2-15? You are in the biggest club in Florida insurance.
In 2024, 42.3% of first-time takers failed the Florida 2-15 — that is roughly 8,500 people a year. Most of them took a 60-hour course, used the practice simulator that came bundled with it, and still walked out short of 70%. Here is what to do differently.
The retake rules (know your budget)
- You can schedule a retake immediately — Florida has no waiting period between attempts.
- Every attempt costs another $44, paid to Pearson VUE.
- Hard cap: 5 attempts per license type per 12 months. Fail 5 times and you sit out the rest of the year.
- Your 60-hour course completion stays valid — you do not retake the course, only the exam.
Why people fail the second time too
The bundled course simulators recycle a small question pool that covers a fraction of the real outline — one widely-shared complaint is that they cover about 30% of the actual exam. The two sections that decide pass/fail are Florida statutes (33% of the exam — pure memorization of free-look days, grace periods, license rules, and unfair trade practices) and annuities. Generic national prep barely touches Florida law.
The second-attempt plan
- Take a full diagnostic mock first — not to study, to locate exactly which of the 12 domains are below 70%.
- Spend 70% of your study time on your three weakest domains. Points come from weaknesses, not from re-reading strengths.
- Drill Florida statutes until they are automatic: 14-day life free look, 30-day Medicare supplement free look, twisting vs. churning vs. sliding, 626.611 vs. 626.621 grounds.
- In the final week, do full-length timed simulations until you clear 80% twice — the buffer that survives exam-day nerves.
