You passed the 2-15. Now what?

Passing the exam is not the license. There are three more things between you and legally selling, and one of them has a clock on it that catches people out.

⏳ Your passing score expires in one year

A passing score is valid for one year from the date you earned it. If the license application is not completed inside that window, you retake the exam — same $44, same five-attempts-per-twelve-months cap. This is the single most expensive thing to forget after passing.

Apply to DFS, and get fingerprinted

The application goes to the Florida Department of Financial Services through MyProfile. Electronic fingerprinting for the background check is part of it, and it is done through the state's approved vendor rather than at DFS itself.

⏳ A license alone does not let you sell

Section 626.112, F.S. is explicit: no person may act as an insurance agent unless currently licensed AND appointed by an appropriate appointing entity. The appointment comes from the insurer or agency you write business for. Licensed but unappointed is not permission to transact.

Continuing education starts its clock

Section 626.2815, F.S. requires a 4-hour law and ethics update course plus 20 hours of elective CE every two years. The elective requirement drops to 16 hours once you have been licensed 6 years, and to 6 hours at 25 years with a CLU, CPCU or a relevant degree. Compliance is a condition of keeping your appointment, not optional.

Licenses that build on the 2-15

The 2-15 is the broadest life and health license Florida issues to a resident. These are the usual next moves, depending on what you want to sell.

2-20

General Lines — Property & Casualty

The other half of the industry: auto, homeowners, commercial. A separate exam and a separate prelicensing course, but holding both 2-15 and 2-20 is what makes an agent full-service.

2-40

Health Agent

Health only. Mostly relevant if you already hold a life-only license — a 2-15 already covers health, so this is rarely a step up from here.

Non-resident

Licenses in other states

Most states issue a non-resident license to an agent already licensed in their home state, usually without another exam. If your book crosses state lines, this is the cheapest expansion available.

Requirements change. Confirm everything on this page against MyFloridaCFO and the current statutes before you rely on it — this is study material, not licensing advice.
